Volkswagen-Proton Tie-Up Talks Called Off

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama)

Collaboration talks for the possible tie-up between German car maker, Volkswagen and Malaysia's national car manufacturer Proton have been called off.

Proton, in a brief statement today, said that Volkswagen confirmed it currently has other priorities and that a potential collaboration with Malaysia's car maker could not be pursued.

As one of the largest Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in the industry, Proton said that Volkswagen, established in 1937, would be an interesting collaboration partner for Proton.

Proton said it acknowledges the decision made by Volkswagen.

Nevertheless, it would continue to forge ahead with its Asean Multi-Local OEM strategy. This includes product collaboration with Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi, the EMAS project and other new model developments.

Proton, which has notched up commendable sales for its Saga, Persona and Exora, said it remains committed to cementing its presence in China through collaboration with Youngman.

Riding on the momentum of a very good 2009/10 financial year result, Proton said it was also eyeing penetration into other Asian markets in the near future and to further strengthen its position domestically.

Proton, established in 1983, is Malaysia's largest manufacturer of automobiles, and the only full-fledged OEM car manufacturer in South-East Asia.

It has operations in key markets from UK to the Middle East, and across South-East Asia and Australasia, especially in countries like China, India and Iran.

Volkswagen may buy over Italdesign Giugiaro?

Volkswagen has almost 10 car brands under its wings and is planning to introduce a further 60 models (including multiple variants and face lifts) this year alone. Volkswagen is slowly building up its repertoire of technical knowledge and car brands in its bid to become the largest automaker by the year 2018. This in turn should reflect a sales figure of 10 million units a year. Thus to achieve that goal Volkswagen has to assimilate skills from already established companies.

It may be doing just that as according to Automotive News Europe, two confirmed sources have concurred on the rumor that Volkswagen will be buying a controlling stake in Italy’s largest design and engineering firm, Ital design Giugiaro. Yes, this is the same ItalDesign Giugiaro that is working with Proton on the next generation Proton Persona replacement as well as the Proton EMAS range extender electric vehicle.

Funny how things work out the way they are – Proton was first in talks on working with Volkswagen, then they ended up working with Giugiaro, but now Volkswagen is rumoured to be buying over Giugiaro. This is supposed to be impending news so you can expect an announcement as early as next week if it really happens. Both Italdesign and Volkswagen have refused to comment on the matter.

Italdesign was co-founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1968 and is owned by him while his son Fabrizio is the design and model head. The company has 975 employees and 800 computer aided design workstations in its Moncalieri head quarters. The company known for its world class design, have been involved with the design of cars such as the Alfa Romeo 159, the Alfa Romeo Brera coupe, the Fiat Grande Punto , the Suzuki SX4 and of course the new Proton Persona replacement and the concept Proton EMAS.

As the company doesn’t disclose its figures (it is a private company) there are no official stats on how well the company does. The latest data, which was from 2008, stated that the company’s revenues increased by 6.2 percent to 136 million Euros which broke even.

The Italian firm’s design work is a selling point for most car manufactures and is always advertised by their respective client. Engineering tasks have often been kept confidential and the only credit they were allowed to take was for the second-generation R56 Mini hatchback as well as its convertible and Clubman wagon counterparts.

New Pricing Across the Range

MILPERRA, AUSTRALIAApril 13, 2010:

Proton Cars Australia has announced a raft of pricing changes effective from 1 April 2010 across its vehicle range, underlining the marque's extreme value for money advantage, ahead of a year of new models and marketing initiatives.

Already the lowest priced sedan on sale in Australia, Proton's S16 G heads the value for money fleet with a recommended retail price of $11,990, a factor which has proved popular with economy car buyers around the country resulting in a four-week waiting list for some variants of the S16.

The S16 is now available in three variants, the price leading S16 G manual for $11,990, the GX manual for $12,990 and the GX automatic for $14,990.

As an added bonus the S16 GX automatic will receive additional features over manual variants including remote electric mirrors, 14" alloy wheels, front fog lights and reverse sensors.

The success of S16 has seen Proton register a 110 percent increase in its current 2010 sales compared with the same period the previous year, which followed an impressive 221 percent sales increase in December when the S16 was launched.

Proton has also announced new pricing on the Satria Neo, Persona and Gen.2.

Satria Neo G manual is now $14,990, Satria Neo GX manual is priced at $15,990 and the Satria Neo GXR manual has been reduced by $1,000 to $16,990. All the Satria Neo variants are available with automatic transmission for an extra $2,000.

Persona G manual is now $15,990 and the Persona GX manual is priced at $17,490. All Persona variants are available in automatic for an extra $2,000.

Gen.2 G manual is priced at $16,990, Gen.2 GX manual at $18,490 and the Gen.2 GXR manual has been reduced by $1,000 to $19,990. The Gen.2 GXR is equipped with leather interior, dual side SRS airbags and front fog lights over and above the GX features. All Gen.2 variants are available in automatic for an extra $2,000.

Proton's Savvy and Jumbuck models are in run out which will no longer be imported into Australia.

Proton Jumbuck GLi is priced at $14,990 making it by far the lowest cost ute or commercial vehicle on the Australian market. The Jumbuck GLSi is priced at $16,990 and adds 14" alloy wheels, power mirrors, power windows, body kit and much more.

Savvy manual hatch is priced at $13,990 (with free metallic paint on tranquillity black) and an additional $2,000 for the Savvy AMT.

According to Proton Cars Australia general manager sales and operations, Billy Falconer Proton's value for money proposition continues to build with more models and keen pricing.

"Our philosophy for Proton is to provide the best priced cars, with great handling, quality and features ensuring a compelling purchase proposition for our customers," said Billy Falconer.

"Buyers are embracing S16 because of the $11,990 price which includes 3 years warranty and 24 hours roadside assistance and as a result we now have a four week waiting list on the car," he said.

As part of its intensified marketing Proton also unveiled an all new website with a number of enhancements including improved functionality in a site that is more straightforward and easy to use.

The new website has been redesigned for search engine optimisation and ease of navigation minimising downtime and increasing page click-thrus so visitors can find the information as easily and quickly as possible.

The enhancements to the website come ahead of the biggest new model onslaught Proton has had in its 15-year history in the Australian market.

During 2010 Proton will introduce several new models and variants into the Australian market including its first people mover and a Lotus Racing Satria Neo R3.

All of the new models will have Proton's high standards of ride and handling thanks to Lotus engineering as well as the marque's proven value for money pricing.

Govt has no intention to sell equity in Proton


KUALA LUMPUR (March 29, 2010):

THE government has no intention to sell its equity in Proton to any foreign companies because it does not want a possibility for the local company to be controlled by a foreigner, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

However, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said, discussions have always been held between the government, through Khazanah Nasional, and foreign companies.

"The discussions were on joint-ventures like in contract assembly or to come out with technical products which can be installed in Proton cars or to upgrade Proton cars or their parts so that they could achieve a higher standard," he said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Ismail Kasim (BN-Arau).

"Among the companies that we have talked to were Volkswagen, Renault, and Mitsubishi. Another benefit from the discussions is, at the same time, we could expand our market overseas."

Ismail said the government does not need to support Proton financially as it should be able to stand on its own.

"At the preliminary stage, we could understand that the government needed to ensure a smooth financial management, continue monitoring or to have government-to-government arrangements," he said.

"But we don’t see any value-added initiatives in Proton. Just compare it to Perodua ... a big adifference."

He said it could be a burden on the part of the government in developing the automotive industry.

Earlier, replying to the original question from Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak), Chor said strategic partnerships with foreign companies would enable Proton to become more competitive at the domestic and international levels.

"Any discussions on foreign equity participation in future must focus on a win-win situation by taking into consideration the interest of the country’s automotive eco-system and the need to retain the Proton brand name," he said.

To Azmin’s question on whether the government will continue injecting funds in Proton in the name of protectionism or nationalism although it does not contribute to the country’s income, Chor said he should look at Proton’s original objective.

"If we don’t come out with our own car under Proton, I believe many of the Malaysians today, especially those in the lower income group, would not be able to possess a car," he said.

"So, while we hope Proton would achieve higher success or make bigger profits in future, in terms of socio-economy, the company has succeeded."

Proton Holdings Bhd will announce whether it will collaborate with India’s Hero Group, the world’s largest motorcycle maker by volume, in the second half of the year.

Previous reports claimed that Proton had been in talks with the Indian motorcycle manufacturer to build small passenger cars for the Indian market.

“We are in discussion (but) we have many things that we need to iron out. We will announce something in the second half of the year,” Proton group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir told reporters after the company launched its Proton Persona Elegance yesterday.

Syed Zainal said the appointment of Behara Venkata Rama Subbu of India as Proton’s new board member earlier this month was crucial and would help fast-track the company’s expansion into the market.

“He (Subbu) has experience working in India and we want to tap his knowledge. We want to go to that market as soon as we can.”

In its research note earlier this month, OSK Research said the appointment of Subbu to Proton’s board was a positive step towards the national carmaker’s plan to enter India.

“Proton has identified India as a potential key market for its overseas business turnaround due to the country’s sizeable population and low vehicle penetration, with an average of 15 vehicles per 1,000 persons.

“With roughly 75% to 80% of India’s vehicle volume comprising two wheelers, this provides an opportune moment for Proton to capture the market potential for motorcyclists upgrading to small cars, given the long delay in owning a Tata Nano due to heavy demand.”

On another note, Syed Zainal said Proton was in talks with various global original equipment manufacturers, including Volkswagen, to form strategic collaborations.

“We spoke with Volkswagen in Geneva and discussions are under way on how we can collaborate,” he said, without elaborating.

Meanwhile, Syed Zainal said Proton had yet to finalise a sales target for the year. The company sold 148,031 units in 2009. “We are finalising the number but we can assure you it will be much better than what we previously did. Since 2006, our domestic volume has increased.”

Separately, Syed Zainal said Proton was targeting to sell 4,000 units of Persona Elegance a month.

He said Persona, the second best-selling model after Proton Saga, had maintained an average monthly sales of 3,600 units.

Syed Zainal added that since its launch in August 2007, 102,914 units of Persona had been registered, with another 6,898 bookings recorded as at February this year.

The 1.6-litre Persona Elegance is available in Base, Medium and High Line variants.The Base Line manual is priced on-the-road from RM46,499, the Medium Line (manual) from RM52,999, and the High Line (automatic transmission only) at RM59,499.

Proton Sees Sales Boost For Persona


SHAH ALAM, March 18 (Bernama) -- Proton Holdings Bhd expects the launch of the Persona Elegance to boost the sales of the Persona series to 4,000 units per month.

Its managing director, Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, said the Persona, the second best selling model after the Saga, had maintained a monthly sales average of 3,600 units.

He said since its launch in August 2007, a total of 102,914 units of the Persona had already been registered with another 6,898 bookings as at February this year.

"The Persona also boasts of a 35 per cent share of the local market for cars in the same class.

"We have done some changes to the car like introducing a number of subtle refinements, enhancements and upgrades," he told reporters after the launch of the Persona Elegance here Thursday.

Syed Zainal Abidin said the features included re-designed headlights and light-emitting diode combi lights, a more pronounced front grille fascia, new upholstery, meter combi fascia, door mirrors with built-in turn indicators, twin front airbags and fullbody-kit for the medium and high line variants.

He said the model would be available in base, medium and high line variants.

"The base line variant with manual transmission is priced at RM46,499 on-the-road (OTR), the medium line (manual) starts at RM52,999 OTR while high line is priced at RM59,499 OTR," he said.

Syed Zainal Abidin said the car would come in five colours -- bronze garnet, chiffon green, genetic silver and tranquility black.

The briliant red will be exclusive to the high line variant, he said.

He said the car would come with a two-year or 50,000 km manufacturer's warranty, plus a three-year or 125,000km extended warranty programme.

A Fresh New Face And Improved Quality For Proton In Australia.

Proton Cars has launched an all-new Persona onto the Australian market with fresh styling, improved build quality and better performance. The new Persona shares only its name with the previous Proton Persona model, a car that was sold in Australia between 1995 and 2005. The new model however is based on the Proton designed and developed GEN.2 platform and uses an improved version of Proton's own Campro 1.6 liter twin cam engine.

The new Persona will come to market with a recommended retail price of $16,990 plus on roads for the five speed manual and $18,990 for the four speed automatic.
